Whispering Pines is the name of my small property located in the horse country of the Virginia Piedmont, under the shadows of the Blue Ridge. I work full time in the large government contracting sector in the Washington, DC Metro area. I do NOT make a living off of 'dog sales.' I breed 1 or 2 litters a year with the goal of furthering my lines in the show world and creating healthy family pets with good temperaments. All Whispering Pines Poodles are shown in various competitions throughout the year as part of my hobby. Primarily I show in the 'show ring' but I also have bred dogs that compete in obedience, agility, 4H, Junior Showmanship, and as of 2008, I have placed my first potential service dog in training. I have high hopes for Joy's future! Many more puppies born here are simply beloved family pets sharing their families lives and homes. |

Each litter here at Whispering Pines is bred with the goal of the TOTAL DOG. I focus on the best structure (conformation), the best health (with full health testing done on the parents), and the best temperament for my puppies. I do not focus on COAT COLOR. Color is dead last in consideration when I'm planning a future litter. If you are a family looking for a companion pet to share your lives and home with, TEMPERAMENT should be your primary concern. You want a pet that will fit into your lifestyle and home for the next 15 or so years. The color the dog is, should be dead last in your decisions. Without a good temperament, nothing else matters. As with all things in life (the old saying goes), you get what you pay for. The price of my puppies is very reasonable for the quality you are getting in a WP's Poodle. It costs a tremendous amount of money to raise, train, and show dogs in the show ring. All the genetic health testing I do on the parent dogs is also very expensive. I estimate that the full health testing for each adult dog here (hips, eyes, skin, thyroid, heart, vWD, etc.) costs me in excess of $1,000 per dog. I do it because I believe in breeding only the BEST quality dogs. Then there are the costs associated with whelping and raising a litter of puppies. Veterinary care required for the mother during pregnancy, tail docking and dewclaws removal on the puppies is also expensive, food (puppies eat mountains of food!), whelping supplies, vaccinations, worming, flea and other parasite treatments, grooming costs (lots and lots of puppy shampoo, new blades for the clippers, etc), plus the time and effort necessary to keep the dogs, puppies, and their environments as clean as possible at all times, easily runs me at least $3,000 to raise each litter born here. That's the bare minimum! Obviously there is no money in breeding dogs if you are doing it right! But I do it because I truly love sharing my life with these beautiful special dogs. Our puppies are raised on a combination of a top premium commercial food that is lamb based and we supplement that with lots of vegetables, yogurt, and fruits purchased locally. We believe in raising Poodles closely aligned to the PCA/AKC Poodle breed standard with the sole exception of the Parti-coat. The Parti-coated Poodle has been a part of the Poodle breed since the very foundation of the breed and is one of the original coat colors of the Poodle. We have both solid and parti-coated poodles and all are loved and treated equally. | |

In a historic move, the United Kennel Club (UKC), an organization almost as old as the AKC but less well known, announced that as of January 1, 2004 they have revised their Poodle breed standards to include the multi-colored Poodles. After extensive research on their part, they concluded that the multi-colored Poodle was part of the original foundation of the Poodle breed and therefore should not be excluded from conformation showing. See the Parti Poodle World website for more details. To support them in this, we became Charter Members of the United Poodle Breeds Association (UPBA), a UKC poodle club, and served for just under two years as the Recording Secretary on their Board Of Directors, and we have dual registered all our Poodles with the UKC and AKC. Starting in the spring of 2004, we entered our dogs in the UKC show rings and we have already finished seven of our dogs as UKC Champions! And four more of our dogs have gone on to win the title of "Grand Champion!" Lastly, we are the Editor of The Parti Times, a monthly full color electronic newsletter devoted to the preservation and advancement of the Parti-coated Poodle. If you are interested in being a subscriber to this publication, see the link at left for more information. The Parti Times newsletter has been in continuous publication since the spring of 2003.
